Celebrating Our 241st Birthday as a Nation

Today, July 4, 2017, We celebrate our nation’s 241st birthday. The experiment in democracy lives on! Well past what many people of the time thought would be the case. You see there had been other republics, most failed, or were failing. The very idea that the people could be trusted to run their own government was a radical concept.

I salute the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence for their wisdom, and their courage. What gall it must have taken to sign such a letter to the King of England. Arguably the most powerful person in the world, at the time.

In 1776, the original 13 colonies were still ruled by the King of England. The Declaration of Independence was a harsh message to the king, and officially put him on notice that the new world would no longer be subjugated.

If you haven’t read the Declaration of Independence in a while, I hope you will take a few minutes to read it and put our holiday celebrations into perspective. Declaration of Independence.

Today our democratic republic is rife with division. It seems that there is very little, upon which we all can agree. Even having a sense of patriotism, and pride in our country, is frowned on by many these days. This turns my stomach.

It is obvious that there are those that want to tear down our nation. It is most disheartening, that many of them are citizens of these great United States. A cancer within, intent to kill the still living experiment in democracy started 241 years ago.

We can all admit that we as a nation, still face challenges. But, we must also admit, that the United States Of America has consistently offered more opportunity, for anyone willing work for it, than any other nation on earth. This was true 241 years ago, and, it is still true today.

No other nation in the world’s history has done more in the cause of liberty, self governance, and freedom from oppression. The principles in our Declaration of Independence are sought out by all the people of the world.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

“That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,”

These may be some of the finest ideals ever written. No government before was founded on such principles.

This year as you are enjoying the barbeque with the family, or the fireworks with friends, remember, as a nation, we have so much to be proud of! The world is a better place because of the United States of America! Stand proud! Fly the flag!
